“The Invention of Lying” is set in an alternate reality in which there is no such thing as lying, and everything said is the absolute truth. In this world people make frank, often rude statements, including those that people would normally keep to themselves. There is no such thing as religious belief, and even advertisements are as bluntly truthful as the people are.

Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) is an unsuccessful lecture-film writer who is in love with beautiful, charming and wealthy Anna McDoogles (Jennifer Garner). She tells Mark she is not attracted to him because he is short and chunky, and he is in an unsuccessful financial situation. Mark is kicked out of his apartment for not paying his rent, and he also gets fired from his job because no-one is interested in his boring films.

All desperate and depressed, Mark he goes to the bank to close his account. For his luck the computers are crashed down and he is being asked how much money he has on his account. There and then it comes to his attention that he is the first person with the ability to lie.

Mark starts lying in a variety of other circumstances, including telling his death-fearing mother on her deathbed that death brings a joyful afterlife in Heaven. The hospital staff over hear his story and he soon receives worldwide attention for his new information about life after death. Soon Mark is considered to be a prophet, and to impress Anna, he then announces that there are “ten rules”, and a “Man In The Sky” who controls everything and gives out rewards in Heaven as long as you do not do “bad things”.

The Invention of Lying is a romantic comedy film, written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson. This film is the directorial debut of Gervais. The film also stars Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, Rob Lowe and Louis C.K.
